Renewables, transmission, storage.
Offshore wind foundations, HVDC interconnectors, pumped storage, hydrogen-ready substations.
What this discipline covers.
Hextal's Energy and Grid division was established in 2010 in response to Europe's accelerating energy transition. In fifteen years it has grown to become the group's second-largest revenue contributor, delivering 14.2 GW of renewable generation capacity across offshore wind, onshore wind, solar, pumped hydro and battery storage.
Our core expertise lies in the civil and structural foundations that support energy generation assets: gravity-base foundations for offshore wind turbines, substation platforms, HVDC converter stations, pumped storage caverns, and the transmission infrastructure that connects generation to consumption. We are not an energy company. We are the engineering company that builds what energy companies need.
The division maintains a permanent fleet of jack-up vessels, crane barges and specialist marine plant, allowing us to self-perform the most critical offshore operations without relying on third-party vessel availability.
Selected works.
Sognefjord Pumped Storage
2.6 GW reversible hydro plant carved into Norwegian gneiss — a battery the size of a fjord.
Nordsee Energy Atoll — Cluster B
A 4.2 GW offshore wind support platform, 64 km off the Dutch coast. 280 × 15 MW turbines on gravity-base foundations.
How we approach this discipline.
Marine logistics planning
Offshore installation windows are dictated by weather. Our logistics teams model metocean data six months ahead to sequence every vessel movement, crane lift and cable pull.
Foundation engineering
Gravity-base, monopile and jacket foundations designed and installed by our own marine engineering teams. We maintain a fleet of jack-up vessels to self-perform critical lifts.
Grid connection coordination
Substation construction, HVDC converter installation and cable routing coordinated with transmission system operators across multiple jurisdictions.
Commissioning and energisation
Full electrical commissioning, protection relay testing and first energy delivery. We do not hand over until the system is generating.
The people behind Energy & Grid.
Henrik Johansson
Henrik oversees Hextal's renewable energy and grid infrastructure practice, which has delivered 14.2 GW of generation capacity across wind, hydro, and solar. He is currently leading the Sognefjord pumped storage programme, the largest reversible hydro project in Scandinavia..
Our energy & grid team includes engineers, project managers, site supervisors and specialist consultants working across the full project lifecycle.
